Former American Samoa resident Hector Petri is making waves as quarterback of the Valley Tech High School football team in Upton, Massachusetts.
After an incomplete pass, and a 7-yard run from senior running back Kevin Barthelmes, Petri took a zone-read play 83 yards for the game-winning touchdown in last Saturdays match up with Assabet High School. “I read the defensive end on a play like that,” Petri said. “I mesh with Kevin. The end went after the jet (Barthelmes) on this play. So when that happens I usually keep the ball and cut back against the grain after the first level.”
“He’s a good athlete,” Assabet coach Ken Stukonis said of Petri. “If you don’t execute perfectly, he’s going to kill you.” Petri’s run put Valley Tech up 26-22 for good. He is the son of former residents Rick and Leuila Petri.
